CeMM Research Report 2025: Front Row Science

We are excited to present the CeMM Research Report 2025, Front Row Science!
For this report, all CeMM members stepped out of their usual environments, the laboratories and the offices, and into society, engaging with the cultural scene. Each research and administrative group visited one of Vienna’s most prominent theaters and performance venues. There, they took the opportunity to discuss their work, the privilege of working in science, as well as the significant responsibility that comes with it and the impact their work can have on medical treatments and people’s health. Photographer Klaus Pichler and theater artist Wolfgang Kainz collaborated to document these conversations in a photo series that also highlights the diversity of Vienna’s cultural landscape. The time has come to recognize scientific research as a legitimate and important part of civic life and as an integral component of culture.
This edition captures also another defining moment for CeMM: the closing of an important chapter under the leadership of Giulio Superti-Furga, the arrival of Maria Rescigno as Scientific Director, and the continued growth of our research and innovation ecosystem. Of course, in the report you will find CeMM’s cutting-edge research results, new projects, innovations we are proud of, and the technologies we employ. However, the CeMM Research Report is not just a collection of results; it also offers a glimpse behind the scenes and highlights the people, ideas, and collaborations that drive CeMM’s work.

We thank City Councillor Veronica Kaup-Hasler for supporting the project and for the inspiring exchange (see the interview in the Research Report). We also thank the directors of the theaters and concert halls, as well as the universities and our parent institution, the ÖAW, for embracing the idea.
