Georg Winter elected as EMBO Member
CeMM warmly congratulates Georg Winter, AITHYRA Scientific Director and CeMM Adjunct Principal Investigator (both institutes of the Austrian Academy of Sciences), on his election to the Membership of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). This year, 71 leading life scientists from 23 countries were elected to the EMBO Membership in recognition of their outstanding research achievements and scientific leadership.
Georg Winter is internationally recognized for his pioneering work in targeted protein degradation and chemical biology. His research has fundamentally advanced our understanding of how small molecules can be used to selectively eliminate disease-causing proteins, opening new therapeutic avenues for cancer and other diseases. Through innovative approaches at the interface of chemistry, biology, and medicine, his laboratory has helped establish targeted protein degradation as one of the most promising strategies in modern drug discovery.
Founded in 1964, EMBO is an organization of more than 2,200 leading life scientists dedicated to promoting excellence in the life sciences across Europe and beyond. Election to the EMBO Membership is a lifelong honor that recognizes scientific excellence and exceptional achievements. EMBO Members play an active role in shaping the future of the life sciences by serving on EMBO's Council, committees and advisory boards, reviewing funding applications, mentoring the next generation of scientists, and fostering scientific exchange and international collaboration.
Georg's election reflects the international impact of his scientific contributions and highlights CeMM's commitment to curiosity-driven research that advances biomedical science and opens new opportunities for improving human health.
The newly elected EMBO Members will be formally welcomed at the EMBO Members' Meeting in Heidelberg, Germany, from 30 September to 2 October 2026.
