A beautiful mind

It is with deep sorrow that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our dear colleague, Martin Watzenböck, who died at the age of 36. Martin was a PhD student at CeMM and MedUni Vienna in the group of Sylvia Knapp and completed his doctorate in 2023. During his time at CeMM and MedUni Vienna, his research focused on immune–microbe interactions in the lung, a topic he approached with both scientific rigor and genuine passion. Following his PhD, Martin continued to pursue his training with a residency in the Department of Image-guided Therapy at MedUni Vienna. He embraced this new chapter with dedication, curiosity, and the same quiet determination that characterized all his work.
Martin was an exceptional young scientist who studied medicine before deciding to complement his training with a PhD in immunology. In addition to his intellectual curiosity, Martin possessed a genuine talent for mathematics—his ability to grasp numbers and master statistical analysis tools was truly remarkable. As a result, he not only thrived when working with multi-omics datasets during his PhD, but also discovered his true passion and fulfillment at the Division of Radiology, where he engaged with complex imaging datasets.
Martin was probably the kindest, most thoughtful, and most supportive colleague one could imagine. He brightened the days of those around him and was one of the rare individuals whose mere mention would bring a smile to everyone’s face.
We will remember Martin for the warmth, kindness, and thoughtfulness he brought to us. He was not only an outstanding physician-scientist, but also a deeply valued colleague and friend who touched the lives of many. Our hearts go out to his family during this difficult time.
