We would like to present you the CeMM Research Report 2023 dedicated to: on the path to Utopia in research. It represents our endeavour to embrace the joy of dreaming and visualizing the future.

What does the future hold? We have embarked on a journey to envision the future, going beyond traditional planning to truly 'dream it up'. Inspired by the EU-LIFE Utopia Conference in Lisbon in 2023, we posed this question to the CeMM community, inviting anyone interested to translate their vision of CeMM's various aspects and spaces into graphics for the 2023 Research Report. Several accepted the challenge. Principal Investigator André Rendeiro, who has been harnessing artificial intelligence for years to decipher tissue architecture, laid the groundwork by providing some initial examples and the beautiful cover of the report, using the Midjourney image generation platform.

André Rendeiro’s description of the cover of the Research Report: “In an utopian research institute for molecular MEDICINE, 100% of activity is to the benefit of human health and longevity. In this scenario not only a possible research building would be a 'normal' and fully integral part of society, but continuous monitoring of one's health into an endless stream of data from individuals all over the planet to the institute would be the norm. This utopian institute is thus enabling real-time, continuous, personalized and preventive care not in a hospital setting but along everyone's normal lives.”

Our pursuit of a Utopian vision is driven by bold ideas and imagination. Living in a free world, a privilege we thankfully enjoy, is fundamental to envisaging the future without the constraints of ideological barriers. Of course, every Utopian perspective bears dystopian potential, thus the report may evoke also anxieties. But our vision of a research utopia is inherently tied to freedom and democracy, in order to have a participatory shaping of the future. Now more than ever, institutions like ours must assertively articulate their worldview. We aim to remain catalysts of technological and societal innovation for the benefit of humanity.
