SYNAPSE Austria: Ten research institutions turn biomedical discovery into therapies and start-ups

Ten Austrian research institutions have announced SYNAPSE Austria, a joint platform to help move life science discoveries from academic research towards new medicines, medical technologies and start-ups.
The platform will bring together expertise, facilities and external networks distributed across the partner institutions. Its work will focus on four areas: connecting expertise and facilities; jointly assessing projects for translational potential; coordinating engagement with industry and investors; and developing funding opportunities with funding agencies and other partners.
A dedicated director will lead SYNAPSE Austria from an office hosted by the Medical University of Vienna, with operations starting before the end of 2026. The platform will complement the work of existing technology transfer offices. It will provide a single point of contact through which pharmaceutical companies and investors can identify relevant projects and research expertise across the partners.
The ten founding research institutions are CeMM, IMBA, IMP, ISTA and XISTA, the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft, the Medical University of Vienna, TU Wien, BOKU University, the University of Vienna and the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna.
Initially bringing together institutions in Vienna and the surrounding region, SYNAPSE Austria is open to additional partners and intends to expand across Austria. Its shared goal is to give promising research a clearer path towards development and, ultimately, patient benefit.
