We are delighted to present the CeMM Research Report 2024, centered around “Equations for Life”!
Behind every biological process and every measurement in the life sciences lies a mathematical equation. These equations help us describe, analyze, and predict—from atomic interactions to complex ecological systems. The cover of this report is the result of a unique team effort: During a CeMM outing in October 2024, our community came together to visualize an essential tool for working with equations effectively—a calculator. This collective creation embodies the collaborative spirit of CeMM.
Science sees the world through equations—expressing relationships between objects, forces, and dimensions. What can we measure? What can we calculate? What can we predict? Biology, at its core, follows physical laws that can be captured through mathematical formulas, bridging the smallest molecular interactions to large-scale biological systems. This perspective is deeply embedded in CeMM’s mission and philosophy.
To illustrate this, we invited each research group and CeMM administration to identify a mathematical equation that best represents their work—one that is most relevant and symbolic for the research of the laboratory, or most apt to describe processes in the administration department.

The CeMM Research Report stands for documentation, joint efforts, and creativity. With the help of Klaus Pichler (photographer, artist) and Wolfgang Kainz (Vienna Business Theater) and the team of BüroX, the 2024 report became again a piece of art, a collection of ideas pulling together photo shootings with team-building activities of great joy and creativity. Thanks to all CeMMies who participated in the creation of the report. We would also like to express our gratitude to the CeMM testimonials, and for the kind support of all location providers for hosting the group photo shootings in Vienna.
