CeMM PhD Program

in Molecular Technologies & Systems Medicine

The CeMM PhD Program offers an exceptional opportunity for aspiring scientists to join a cutting-edge, international research environment at one of Europe’s leading centers for molecular medicine. Based in Vienna, CeMM is dedicated to addressing major medical challenges through innovative research in cancer, inflammation, immune disorders, and aging-related diseases.

A unique PhD experience in Molecular Medicine

Established in 2006, the CeMM PhD Program has grown into a prestigious international program, attracting students from over 40 countries. The program is guided by CeMM Scientific Director Giulio Superti-Furga, who also serves as the Dean, and is conducted in close collaboration with the St. Anna Children’s Cancer Research Institute and the Medical University of Vienna.

CeMM trains a new generation of researchers by integrating post-genomic technologies with a deep molecular understanding of biological systems. Our PhD candidates explore the foundations of cell and molecular biology, apply this knowledge to decipher disease mechanisms, and contribute to the development of predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine.

Interdisciplinary collaboration at its core

What sets the CeMM PhD Program apart is its interdisciplinary and collaborative research culture. Our teams bring together life scientists, medical doctors, computer scientists, chemists, mathematicians, and physicists to solve complex biomedical questions. This diverse academic environment fosters innovation and scientific discovery.

PhD students are not only immersed in world-class biomedical research but also trained in project communication and management, preparing them for leadership roles in translational science and beyond.

A global, inclusive scientific community

At CeMM, diversity drives discovery. Our PhD community includes students from 26 nationalities, working together in English in an open and inclusive atmosphere. We believe that diverse perspectives inspire creativity and lead to more impactful science.

As of the end of 2024, 105 students have successfully completed their PhD at CeMM, with 83 more currently pursuing their research journeys with us.
