Excellence in Research

The Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) is Austria’s leading non-university institution for fundamental research. Founded in 1847, it operates under a legal mandate to promote science at the highest level, foster interdisciplinary dialogue, and contribute to the dissemination of knowledge across society.
With over 25 research institutes—including the CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine—the Academy covers a wide range of disciplines, from quantum physics and climate research to archaeology and biomedical sciences.
The core missions of the ÖAW include:
• Outstanding Research: Supporting and conducting internationally visible, high-impact research across disciplines.
• Fostering Young Talent: Providing scholarships, fellowships, and career programs for early-career researchers.
• Science Communication: Promoting public engagement with science through outreach, publications, and policy dialogue.
• Global Collaboration: Building strong partnerships with leading scientific institutions worldwide.
As the host institution of CeMM, the ÖAW provides a framework for independent, innovative, and socially relevant biomedical research—committed to scientific excellence and public value.
